Job Description
We’re hiring for Forward Deployed Engineer to be based in Jakarta. As FDE, you’ll be at the front line of deploying AI Rudder’s conversational AI into real customer environments across industries. Working closely with customers and internal engineering teams, you’ll build the backend systems and integrations that turn a use case into a working, production conversational AI deployment. This role calls for real backend engineering skill, comfort using AI tools to move faster without losing ownership of the outcome, and the ability to sit directly with a customer and solve their problem end to end.
This role will require business travel most of the time and will mainly cover the APAC region.
Responsibilities
- Understand customer problems and requirements; clarify impact, scope, priorities, and acceptance criteria.
- Translate customer workflows into technical plans, including milestones, risks, and launch criteria.
- Build quick prototypes when requirements are unclear, then turn the right parts into production-ready systems.
- Troubleshoot cross-service issues using logs, metrics, and data, and drive them to resolution.
- Collaborate with product, engineering, QA, and customer teams on validation, launch, monitoring, and handover.
- Share learnings from real deployments with product and engineering, flagging gaps and building tooling where needed.
- Turn recurring issues into documentation, tests, tools, or other reusable solutions.
- Design and build backend services, APIs, customer integrations, and automation features, writing real production code and using AI engineering tools to accelerate the work. You’ll work in Go or Python after onboarding, even without prior experience in them.
Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- 3 years of full-time experience in software engineering, AI/ML engineering, or Forward Deployed Engineering, solutions/implementation/integration engineer, or complex B2B delivery.
- Hands-on backend engineering experience: has built, tested, and debugged real production systems, not scripts or tutorials.
- Experience taking customer-facing projects from ambiguous requirements to production. Comfortable pushing back when scope or timeline is at risk.
- Working proficiency in English: able to read English technical materials, API documentation, and error messages, able to independently lead English-language customer technical meetings, including problem clarification, objection handling, and action item confirmation.
- Hands-on experience using AI coding tools on real engineering work, and able to explain how you verified the results.
- Comfortable communicating problems, risks, and next steps directly with customers.
- Able to solve problems in unfamiliar systems using logs, metrics, and small experiments.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in voice contact centers, inbound or outbound calling, campaign or dialer systems, ACD or agent desktop tools, telephony, Voice AI, or real-time communications. Alternatively, experience with digital messaging, chatbots, channel integrations, conversation-to-human handoff, or CRM and ticketing integrations.
- Has used Go or Python in real work projects, and can speak in depth about backend development, testing, or troubleshooting work you personally completed.
- Comfortable using AI to understand unfamiliar codebases, make multi-file changes, add tests, troubleshoot complex issues, or refactor and migrate code, and can explain how you verified the results.
- Has built reusable AI agent workflows, context standards, or quality checks for a team, and helped others adopt them.
- Familiarity with databases, caching, messaging systems, gRPC, async tasks, or state machines.
- Exposure to Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, monitoring, canary or gradual rollouts, incident response, or automated testing.
- Exposure to TypeScript, React, Vue, WebSocket, browser SDKs, or micro-frontends.
- Experience building LLM applications, agents, RAG systems, model evaluation, or intelligent automation. A plus for building AI products, but doesn’t replace the core requirement of strong AI-assisted software engineering.
